First Baptist Church committed itself to be a part of the Family Promise of Carteret ministries in 2012 as a host church because of the great need we had in our community to provide shelter, meals, and comprehensive support to families without a home.
Many folks have stereotyped the homeless with alcohol and drug abuse. However this does not portray the homeless population accurately. Families with young children account for over 40% of America's homeless.
There are many reasons for a family's homelessness, but the root cause is the lack of affordable housing. Through Family Promise, we are able to minister to these families by providing accommodations and meals for up to 14 people for one week every quarter.
FBC provides rooms for our guest to sleep as well as a separate room for our overnight host to sleep. Guest will arrive around 5pm and our meal teams will serve a meal around 6pm. In the morning our guest will fix their breakfast and a bag lunch before leaving for the day at 7am. Our van drivers will meet our guest at 7am and transport them to the day center where the children are able to catch the bus to their school.
Our overnight and daytime host will socialize with our guest, may help the children with homework, and be available if our guests have any problems or questions.
Volunteers are needed in the following areas.
Overnight Host
We need two hosts each night. You will arrive at the church around 6pm and share supper with out guest. Doors are secured at 8pm each night. You should be able to depart at 7am the next morning.
